Health surveillance for Sydney and NSW workplaces

Employees Health provides doctor-led health surveillance and workplace medicals for employers across Sydney and New South Wales. Since 1996 our team, led by Chief Medical Officer Dr Mike Shenouda, has helped businesses meet their health monitoring duties without pulling crews off the job for long. Most programs are delivered onsite at your workplace, whether that is a tunnelling project in western Sydney, a factory in the south-west or a depot in the Hunter, with clinic appointments available where they suit your workers better.

Sydney’s run of major infrastructure, residential construction and manufacturing means many NSW workers handle materials that can generate silica dust, disturb asbestos or involve hazardous chemicals. Where those risks are significant, the WHS Regulation requires health monitoring, and we can set up and run that program for you.

Who regulates health monitoring in NSW

NSW uses the model Work Health and Safety laws, regulated by SafeWork NSW. Since 1 July 2025, SafeWork NSW has operated as an independent statutory regulator led by a SafeWork Commissioner, rather than sitting inside the Department of Customer Service. Its duties for employers have not changed: if a worker is carrying out ongoing work with a hazardous chemical listed in Schedule 14 of the WHS Regulation and there is a significant risk to their health, the business must arrange health monitoring under the supervision of a registered medical practitioner with experience in health monitoring, pay for it, and keep the reports confidential.

Two other NSW arrangements are worth knowing about:

  • Mines and petroleum sites. The NSW Resources Regulator oversees safety at mines and petroleum sites and publishes its own guidance on health monitoring for mining and extractive workplaces.
  • Coal mining. Health surveillance for NSW coal mine workers is administered by Coal Services under the Coal Industry Act 2001, through orders that set out assessments for workers entering and working in the industry. If your workforce falls under those orders, talk to us about how our programs fit alongside them.

Silica, asbestos and stone work in Sydney

Construction, tunnelling, demolition and stonemasonry all create risks from respirable crystalline silica. Engineered stone benchtops, panels and slabs have been banned nationally since 1 July 2024, but work with legacy engineered stone, natural stone, concrete, brick and tiles continues, and stronger rules for processing crystalline silica substances have applied under the model WHS laws since 1 September 2024. Our silica health surveillance medicals include a work and exposure history, a respiratory questionnaire, lung function testing and chest imaging where the program calls for it.

Sydney’s older housing stock and commercial buildings also mean asbestos is a daily reality for removalists, demolition crews, plumbers and electricians. Our asbestos health surveillance covers workers before they start licensed removal work and at regular intervals after that.

Services we deliver across NSW

  • Hazardous substance monitoring for lead (including blood lead testing for lead risk work), isocyanates in spray painting and panel shops, solvents, welding fumes and Schedule 14 chemicals.
  • Lung function testing (spirometry) as part of respiratory health monitoring.
  • Chest imaging. We can coordinate mobile X-ray for Sydney workplaces, so workers have chest imaging done onsite rather than travelling to radiology.
  • Hearing tests. Baseline and periodic audiometric testing for workers who need hearing protection on noisy sites, plants and workshops.
  • Onsite skin cancer checks for outdoor crews.
  • Corporate and executive health assessments for leadership teams and office staff in the CBD and beyond.

Sydney, the Hunter, the Illawarra and regional NSW

We work across Greater Sydney and the Central Coast, and travel to Newcastle and the Hunter, Wollongong and the Illawarra, the Central West, the Riverina, the North Coast and the far west. Because we come to you, a program for a single regional site can be run the same way as one for a metropolitan head office, using the same assessments and the same reporting. For larger or spread-out workforces we can schedule visits around shift rosters, start times and shutdowns so that testing fits around production.

What employers receive

Each worker is assessed by our clinical team, and results are reviewed by a doctor. You receive a health monitoring report for each worker that meets the regulation’s requirements, with clear recommendations where follow-up is needed, plus a summary that helps you see patterns across your workforce and check whether your controls are working. Workers receive their own results and are referred to their GP or a specialist where appropriate.

If you are not sure whether health monitoring is required for a particular task, our team can talk through the exposures involved and the relevant NSW guidance with you before you book. Our health surveillance and monitoring programs are built around the hazards on your site rather than a fixed package.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who regulates health monitoring in NSW?

SafeWork NSW regulates health monitoring under the NSW Work Health and Safety Act and Regulation. Since 1 July 2025 it has operated as an independent statutory regulator led by a SafeWork Commissioner. Mines and petroleum sites are overseen by the NSW Resources Regulator.

When does a NSW business have to provide health monitoring?

Health monitoring is required where a worker is carrying out ongoing work with a hazardous chemical listed in Schedule 14 of the WHS Regulation, such as crystalline silica or isocyanates, and there is a significant risk to their health. Lead risk work and asbestos work have their own health monitoring requirements. The business pays for it, and it must be supervised by a registered medical practitioner with experience in health monitoring.

Can you do health monitoring onsite in the Hunter or the Illawarra?

Yes. We deliver health surveillance onsite at workplaces across Sydney, the Hunter, the Illawarra and regional NSW, and can schedule visits around shifts and shutdowns. Clinic appointments are also available where they suit your workers.

Do NSW coal mine workers need separate health assessments?

Health surveillance for NSW coal mine workers is administered by Coal Services under the Coal Industry Act 2001, through orders that set out assessments for workers in the industry. If your workforce is covered by those orders, let us know so we can plan our services around them.

Can you provide mobile chest X-rays in Sydney?

Yes. We can coordinate mobile chest X-ray at Sydney workplaces where imaging is clinically required as part of silica, asbestos or other respiratory health monitoring. Availability depends on site location, workforce size and radiology logistics.

If your organisation is managing hazardous substance exposure risks, you are required to implement structured health surveillance under WHS legislation. We help you do it properly — on-site, nationwide.
