Health surveillance in Darwin and the Northern Territory
Running health monitoring in the Northern Territory means dealing with long distances, small populations at many sites, extreme heat and a wet season that can close roads for weeks. Employees Health has delivered doctor-led occupational health services since 1996, and we bring health surveillance onsite to workplaces in Darwin, regional towns and remote sites across the Territory, with clinic options where they suit your team.
NT WorkSafe and the Territory’s WHS laws
The Northern Territory applies the model Work Health and Safety laws through the Work Health and Safety (National Uniform Legislation) Act 2011 and its regulations. The regulator is NT WorkSafe, which also administers work health and safety in the Territory’s mining industry, with technical inspectors who cover mining and petroleum operations. That means general workplaces and mine sites in the NT deal with the same regulator.
A business must provide health monitoring where a worker is carrying out ongoing work with a hazardous chemical listed in Schedule 14 of the regulations and there is a significant risk to their health. The business pays for it, and it is supervised by a registered medical practitioner with experience in health monitoring.
The NT silica code of practice
NT WorkSafe has a Territory code of practice, Managing risks of respirable crystalline silica in the workplace, based on the national model code developed by Safe Work Australia. NT WorkSafe notes that respirable crystalline silica is a known carcinogen and is listed as a hazardous chemical under Territory WHS law, and that employers may need to carry out both air monitoring and health monitoring for workers who may be exposed. The national prohibition on engineered stone benchtops, panels and slabs from 1 July 2024 also applies in the NT.
Silica risks in the Territory come mostly from mining and quarrying, road building, concrete and masonry work, and civil construction. Our silica health surveillance medicals include an exposure history, a respiratory questionnaire, lung function testing and chest imaging where the program requires it.
Industries we work with in the NT
- Defence and defence contractors around Darwin and the Top End, including maintenance, fuel handling, construction and workshop roles.
- Gas, energy and petroleum, including processing plants, shutdown and maintenance crews, and supply bases.
- Mining and exploration across the Top End, the Barkly and Central Australia.
- Construction and civil works, from Darwin and Palmerston developments to roads, bridges and community infrastructure.
- Ports, transport, pastoral and agriculture, where noise, pesticides and long hours in the sun are common.
Remote sites, FIFO and the wet season
Many NT workers are on FIFO or DIDO rosters, or based at sites a long way from a clinic. We plan visits so a whole crew can be assessed in one trip, and schedule testing at the start or end of a swing so workers are not called in on their days off. Night-shift and rotating-shift crews can be covered in the same visit.
Timing matters in the Top End. Where roads to remote sites are affected during the wet season, it usually makes sense to plan periodic health monitoring for the dry season and book it early. For sites that remain accessible year round, we can schedule around heat, with early starts and short appointments.
We cover Darwin, Palmerston and the rural area, and travel to Katherine, Tennant Creek, Alice Springs, Nhulunbuy, Jabiru and remote sites across the Territory.
Services for Territory workplaces
- Health surveillance and monitoring for silica, asbestos, lead (including blood lead monitoring), isocyanates, solvents, welding fumes, pesticides and other hazardous substances.
- Lung function testing (spirometry) for dust and fume exposures, with chest imaging coordinated where clinically required.
- Audiometric testing for workers around heavy plant, generators, aircraft, drilling and processing equipment.
- Onsite skin cancer checks for outdoor workers exposed to strong year-round sun.
- Corporate and executive health assessments for Darwin offices and senior teams.
Doctor-reviewed reporting
Every result is reviewed by a doctor. You receive a health monitoring report for each worker and a workforce summary that helps you check whether controls are working across sites and rosters. Where follow-up is needed we explain the next steps, and workers receive their own results with a referral to their GP or a specialist where appropriate. If crews change often, tell us when new workers start so baseline assessments can be planned into the next visit.
