Health surveillance for Brisbane and Queensland employers
Queensland’s workforce is spread across a huge area, from Brisbane’s construction and manufacturing corridors to coal and metalliferous mines, farms, ports and coastal towns. Employees Health has provided doctor-led occupational health services since 1996, and we deliver health surveillance onsite at your workplace anywhere in Queensland, with clinic options where they make more sense for your team.
The Queensland regulatory picture
Queensland applies the model Work Health and Safety laws through the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 and the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011. The general regulator is Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ), which is part of the Office of Industrial Relations and also publishes guidance under the WorkSafe Queensland name.
Under the regulation, a business must provide health monitoring where a worker is carrying out ongoing work with a hazardous chemical listed in Schedule 14 and there is a significant risk to their health, or where monitoring is otherwise needed to work out whether exposure is affecting a worker’s health. The business pays for the monitoring, which is supervised by a registered medical practitioner with experience in health monitoring.
Queensland’s silica code for construction
Queensland was the first jurisdiction to make a code of practice dedicated to silica dust in construction. The Managing respirable crystalline silica dust exposure in construction and manufacturing of construction elements Code of Practice 2022 took effect on 1 May 2023. It covers construction work and the manufacture of products such as bricks, blocks, tiles, mortar and concrete, and it links health monitoring to the level of risk of each task, including whether respiratory protection is needed. WHSQ has run audits and an ongoing awareness and enforcement campaign since the code started.
This sits alongside the national prohibition on engineered stone benchtops, panels and slabs from 1 July 2024 and the stronger rules for processing crystalline silica substances that followed. Our silica health surveillance medicals are set up to match the tasks and controls on your site.
Coal mine workers
Coal mine workers in high-risk roles in Queensland have health assessments under the Coal Mine Workers’ Health Scheme, which is overseen by Resources Safety & Health Queensland (RSHQ) and focuses on fitness for work and the early detection of respiratory disease. If your workforce includes coal mine workers, let us know so we can plan our health surveillance around the scheme’s requirements rather than duplicating them.
Industries we support in Queensland
- Construction and civil works in South East Queensland, including concrete cutting, tunnelling, roadworks and demolition, where silica, asbestos and noise are common risks.
- Mining and resources in the Bowen Basin, the north-west and the Surat Basin, including contractors and maintenance crews.
- Agriculture and food processing, where workers may handle pesticides, work around noisy machinery or spend long days in the sun.
- Manufacturing, fabrication and automotive workshops using isocyanate paints, solvents, lead and welding processes.
- Ports, transport and utilities with outdoor and shift-based workforces.
Services we provide
Our health surveillance and monitoring programs cover silica, asbestos, lead (including blood lead monitoring), isocyanates, organophosphate pesticides, solvents and other hazardous substances. Programs can include lung function testing, chest imaging where clinically indicated, and doctor review of every result.
We also offer onsite audiometric testing for noise-exposed workers, and corporate and executive health assessments for Brisbane head offices. Queensland’s UV levels make skin checks a practical addition for outdoor crews: our onsite skin cancer checks use dermatoscopy and refer any suspicious lesions for follow-up.
Brisbane, South East Queensland and beyond
We cover Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, Moreton Bay, the Gold Coast and the Sunshine Coast, and travel to Toowoomba and the Darling Downs, Gladstone, Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville, Cairns and the mining regions. Remote and regional sites can be visited as a planned trip so a whole crew is assessed in one go.
For FIFO and DIDO workforces we can schedule testing around swings and rosters, including assessments at the start or end of a swing, so workers are not called in on their days off. Shift-based operations can book sessions that cover day and night crews.
Clear results and reporting
Every assessment is reviewed by a doctor. Employers receive a health monitoring report for each worker and a workforce summary that helps show whether dust, noise and chemical controls are working, with clear recommendations where follow-up is needed. Workers receive their own results and are referred to their GP or a specialist where appropriate.
